Sigma Nu

The founding of Sigma Nu at Virginia Military Institute. 

Sigma Nu was the first honor fraternity in the entire nation. It was founded on January 1, 1869 by the three gentlemen at the Virginia Military Institute pictured above. It was founded in light of the turmoil at VMI at that time. The upperclassmen hazed the lower classmen relentlessly, and James Hopkins, one of our founders, was not going to tolerate it any longer. He, along with Greenfield Quarles and James Riley, founded Sigma Nu to stop the hazing at VMI. From this very idea come Sigma Nus most sacred values of Love, Truth, and Honor.
