McKendree University Junior High Concert Band Camp FAQ

Who May Attend Band Camp? Band camp is open to any student currently in the 5th – 8th grade who will have completed (by June) at least one year of school instruction on their instrument.

Where is Band Camp? On the campus of McKendree University. Drive down Alton Street and you will see the beautiful Hettenhausen Center for the Arts (The Hett) on the right hand side of the street. You will drop off, and pick up, in the circular drive outside of the Hett. If you need to come in with your student on Monday, please park in the main lot directly next to the Hett.

What are Band Camp Hours? In 2021, in order to follow all COVID-19 safety guidelines so our participants and staff stay healthy while making music together, we will host two separate band camp sessions:

June 7 – 10 Morning Session (9:00 – 12:00 Noon):

Percussion Ensemble (6th – 8th grade percussionists)

Saxophone Ensemble (6th – 8th grade saxophones)

5th Grade Concert Band (all current 5th grade band members)

June 7 – 10 Afternoon Session (1:00 – 4:00):

Brass Ensemble (6th – 8th grade brass musicians – trumpets, French horns, trombones, baritones, tubas)

Woodwind Ensemble (6th – 8th woodwind musicians – flutes, clarinets, bass clarinets, oboes, bassoons)

Morning Session Participants may be dropped off as early as 8:30 and must be picked up by 12:30.

Afternoon Session Participants may be dropped off as early as 12:30 and must be picked up at by 4:30.

Performance! Our time together – learning, growing in our love for music, and making music in these special groups – is the ultimate goal of the week. However, music is meant to be shared so we will have a final “concert” for the participants family and friends. Due to COVID-19 regulations, each session will video record their ‘concert’ on Thursday and a culmination video will be made and posted during the week of June 14.

COVID-19 Safety! We will follow all McKendree University COVID-19 Guidelines throughout the week to ensure that we can make music together again while keeping all participants and staff healthy. What does this mean? First and foremost – space is limited. We will take the first 16-25 registered participants in each section so we can follow social distancing (6-foot) guidelines. Masks must be worn when students are not playing. Students will need their own water bottle (labeled) while at camp. A covid safety checklist needs to be completed at home prior to coming to camp each day – including a temperature and symptoms check.

What is the Band Camp Fee? The band camp cost is $80 for the week. This covers: daily snack, staffing (each session will have a professional educator and a collegiate music education major assisting), professional musician performances, music, and camp t-shirt.

Who Staffs the Camp? The camp is run by Dr. Jennifer Moder-Bell, Associate Professor of Music Education and Director of Bands at McKendree University. Each session will be run by a McKendree University Professor:

Percussion Ensemble – Professor Andre Sonner
Saxophone Ensemble – Professor Nick Pyles
Brass Ensemble – Professor Matt Kuebler
Woodwind Ensemble – Professor Nick Pyles
5th Grade Full Band – Dr. Jennifer Moder-Bell

Each section will also have a McKendree University music education major who will assist the students throughout our time together.

What do Students Participate in Each Day? Each day the participating musicians will have full ensemble rehearsals, sectionals (to work on their concert music), and masterclasses (to learn more about their specific instrument). A professional musician will give a short recital for the students every day. To round out the day, campers will have a game/snack break.

Things to Bring to Camp: Instrument (in good playing condition), pencil, water bottle (labeled with their name), mask. Wear comfortable clothes as game breaks will be held outside. Students need to leave their cell phone in their case during camp hours.

Theme and Concert Dress Days: We encourage students to dress for specific theme days (prizes…):

Monday – Purple Day – Wear purple for McKendree!

Tuesday – Sports Day – wear your favorite jersey or sports team shirt.

Wednesday – Your Favorite Outfit Day

Thursday – Band Camp T-shirt day (shirts will be sent home Wednesday)

Medicine: If your student has medical concerns or needs to take medicine during the day, a parent/guardian must come in to registration with them on Monday. There will be a sign-in table (go here first) and a separate table for medical needs. All medicine taken must be listed on your google form registration.

Needed Supports/Accommodations: If your student has a medical condition or disability yet are able to participate in a large group, high activity setting, they are welcome at our camp as we view music and education as something for everyone. However, you must report these conditions on the google form registration under “medical needs” (this information will be kept confidential). It is important that we have this information to ensure that all campers and staff members have a positive camp experience. We want all campers to be fully supported. Examples of conditions that should be reported on the registration form include: autism, Asperger's, ADHD, depression, severe anxiety, intellectual disabilities, etc. If an issue arises during camp and the need has not been disclosed on the registration form, your student will unfortunately be immediately sent home from the camp and no refunds will be granted.

Important Items to Note / Rules and Regulations:

1. Participating students must be at camp for 100% of our time together. Students will not be allowed to leave for other camps, appointments, etc.

2. Medical and needed supports must be clearly articulated on the back of your registration form.

3. By submitting the google form registration, you agree that your student will participate in camp – space is limited as all COVID-19 guidelines will be followed.
