McKendree Anti-Hazing Policy
Hazing is prohibited. No person or group may pressure or require someone to participate in degrading or humiliating activities or in situations that threaten a person’s health, safety, or well-being as a condition of joining or remaining in an organization, group, or team.

Illinois Hazing Law
Illinois law prohibits knowingly requiring a student or other person to perform an unauthorized act for admission or induction into a group connected with an educational institution when the act results in bodily harm. Consent or acquiescence is not a defense. Hazing is generally a Class A misdemeanor but becomes a Class 4 felony when it results in death or great bodily harm.

Illinois law requires a school official who, while fulfilling their official responsibilities, personally observes an unauthorized act that results in bodily harm to report the act to supervising educational authorities or, if the act results in death or great bodily harm, to law enforcement. A knowing failure to report is generally a Class B misdemeanor and becomes a Class A misdemeanor when the act resulted in death or great bodily harm.

McKendree University has not identified a separate local or Tribal law specifically governing hazing that applies to the University. Other generally applicable criminal laws and local ordinances may apply depending on the conduct involved.
Federal Hazing Law
The Stop Campus Hazing Act amended the Clery Act to require colleges and universities to collect and disclose hazing statistics, publish information about organizational hazing violations, maintain hazing policies and reporting procedures, and provide campus-wide hazing prevention and awareness programming.

The University will review reports promptly and take steps to support affected individuals and address safety concerns.
Reports of suspected hazing will be reviewed and investigated in accordance with the procedures established in the Student Code of Conduct. Student organizations and individual students may be addressed through separate conduct proceedings when appropriate.

This section identifies established or recognized student organizations found responsible for hazing under University policy. It does not include pending investigations, reports that did not result in a finding of responsibility, or personally identifiable information about individual students.
