Military Appreciation Week

Join McKendree University students, faculty, and staff as we celebrate and honor our nation’s military by attending one of the several military appreciation week activities from Nov. 11-16, 2013.


Monday, November 11:

Veterans Day Service, Noon outside Bothwell Chapel. A ceremony will be held to dedicate 117th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment, aka “The McKendree Regiment”, Civil War Monument. We will also partner with The Fight Continues in the national “Reading of the Fallen” to commemorate fallen soldiers from all U.S. conflicts. Tuesday, November 12:

 Emerging Leaders Chili Cook-Off, 11am-1pm in Piper Academic Center Lounge

(proceeds go to the Wounded Warrior Project)


Military Appreciation Game: Men’s Basketball, 7pm Melvin Price Convocation Center. Wounded Warriors will be honored. Free tickets available with Military ID. To reserve tickets, email


Thursday, November 14:

 Lunch and Learn, Noon in Piper Academic Center 222.  Essie Calhoun, Executive Director of Opal’s House and Leon Jenkins, Veterans Administration Representative are the featured speakers.


APO Red Cross Blood Drive, 1-6pm in the Intermural Gym/Melvin Price Convocation Center.


Veterans Education Benefits Workshop, 6pm in Circuit Riders (Bothwell Chapel). Roland Smith, 375th Force Support Squadron Education Center Manager, will facilitate the workshop.


Friday, November 15:

Military Appreciation Game: Women’s Volleyball, 7pm in Melvin Price Convocation Center . Military Spouses will be honored. Free tickets with a military ID.  To reserve tickets, email


Saturday, November 16:

 Service Project, 8 a.m. to Noon at Opal’s House in East St. Louis. We will be partnering with the Lyn Huxford Center for Community Service to hold a service project at Opal’s House.  All McKendree students, faculty and staff are invited to volunteer.


Military Appreciation Tailgate, 2-5pm in the Quad.  Several military-related organizations and activities will be available, including the Veterans Administration Mobile Center from Springfield, Ill., the USO-Missouri Mobile Unit, The Mission Continues, State of Illinois VFW Service Officers, VFW Post #805, American Legion Post #0283, and holiday card making for the troops.


Military Appreciation Game: Football, 6pm at Leemon Field.  All active-duty military, veterans and gold star families will be honored.  The presentation of colors will be made by the O’Fallon High School Jr. ROTC and a special military salute will be performed by the McKendree University Marching Band, Color Guard, Dance Team and Cheerleaders.
