Veterans Day Activities

Join McKendree University as we celebrate and honor our nation's military, past and present, by attending one of the several military appreciation activities on November 11, 2015.

Brown Bag, Noon

The McKendree Brown Bag committee and Professor Duane Olson will host a 50-minute presentation, entitled "Veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan at McKendree University" in Piper Academic Center, Room 222.  Dr. Olson will be the keynote speaker and McKendree veterans Joseph Gebke '16 and Jake Pratt '17 will share their experiences serving in the military.

Sesquicentennial Civil War Memorial Trail, 4pm

In honor of the 150th Anniversary of the muster-out of the 117th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment in 1865, a memorial trail will start in front of the flag pole in the Quad and end in front of the "McKendree Regiment" monument in front of Bothwell Chapel.  Student members of Phi eta Sigma, Phi Kappa Phi and Rotaract will display 958 flags in the Quad to honor the soldiers who were members of the "McKendree Regiment" and place signs with regiment facts along the trail.  A special ceremony will be held that will include:

  • Presentation of Colors
  • Invocation
  • Regiment Roll Call & History
  • Patriotic Music
  • Recitation of Letter written by Col. Rison M. Moore
  • Civil War Artifacts in the McKendree Museum

 Honor Flight, 6:30pm

A special discussion with local WWII veterans who have participated in an Honor Flight trip and a free screening of the "Honor Flight" movie will be held at the Hettenhausen Center for the Arts.  "Honor Flight" is an award-winning, heartwarming documentary about four World War II veterans and a Midwest community coming together to give them the trip of a lifetime.  All over the nation, including Central and Southern Illinois and the Greater St. Louis area, volunteers are currently racing against the clock to fly thousands of veterans from World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War, at no cost to them, to Washington D.C. to view the memorials dedicated in their honor.  The discussion will start at 6:30pm followed by the movie screening at 7pm.
