Director of Public Safety
McKendree University is seeking qualified applicants for the Director of Public Safety position. This is a full-time position with benefits and reports to the Vice President for Operations. The Director is responsible for the organization, direction, and supervision of the University’s Public Safety Department. The Director administers the program’s activities by formulating polices and providing sound leadership and management.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Ensure safety and security for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
- Ensure University compliance with federal, state and county security and safety requirements.
- Perform management functions such as scheduling, staffing, evaluating, reporting, and budgeting.
- Responsible for planning, implementing, administering, and coordinating the University’s Emergency Response Plan, Public Safety Procedures Manual, and the overall operations of the Department of Public Safety, in addition to providing consultative, technical and administrative direction.
- Develop proactive programs to provide reasonable safety and security for students, faculty, staff, and the public on university property.
- As chief law enforcement officer for the University; responsible for training University staff and administers and directs law enforcement functions in all areas relating to the protection of life and property, including police services, crime prevention programs, fire safety and key control.
- Direct investigations on criminal incidents as needed and coordinates all criminal incidents through the Lebanon Chief of Police.
- Administer campus parking, traffic programs and enforces all laws.
- Manage parking rules and regulations, traffic enforcement and violator ticket appeals.
- Provide or assist with safety, security, and crowd control at athletic, cultural, social and public events on campus.
- Maintain crime statistics and annually updates the Federal Clery Act Safety and Security Survey/ Report.
- Other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
- At least 10 years’ experience in law enforcement.
- Must be a US Citizen.
- No record or criminal convictions of a felony or a crime involving moral turpitude.
- Must have a valid driver’s license, must pass annual DMV check, and be insurable.
- Possess a valid Firearm Owners Identification Card.
- Must possess an Illinois Police Officer Certification within six months of the appointment unless waivered in accordance with ILCS 50, Act 705/8.1.g
- Must pass background, psychological, and drug screenings.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to interact effectively with students, employees, and management.
- Ability to identify problems quickly and make accurate, timely decisions.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Professional certifications in Security, Law Enforcement, Emergency Medical Services or other areas related to Public Safety are desirable.
WORK HOURS/CONDITIONS:
12-hour shifts, shift work, weekends and holidays included. Position requires extensive walking, working outdoors in all types of weather.
