Annual Community Service Day is Part of New Student Orientation

(LEBANON, Ill., August 9, 2018) — McKendree University students will participate in a volunteer day called “Into the Streets” as part of New Student Orientation on Saturday, Aug. 25 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Hundreds of first-year students will help out at one of 21 sites primarily in Lebanon, Mascoutah, East St. Louis and Clinton County. Activities will include gardening, cleaning and working outside. Organizations that will benefit from the students’ help include the Lebanon Garden Club, Lebanon Winter Wonderland, Cedar Ridge Nursing Home, Mascoutah Senior Center, Leu Civic Center, Christian Activity Center, Lessie Bates Davis Neighborhood House and several local churches.

Coordinated by the university’s Lyn Huxford Center for Community Service, “Into the Streets” enables students to build relationships though service, and to learn about the help they can provide and opportunities for continued volunteer work, said Colleen Smyth, coordinator.
