Students in McKendree’s Honors Program work closely with faculty mentors to complete original research in their fields of study. These presentations represent the culmination of honors students’ projects and allow them to share their knowledge in a public forum.

The presenter will analyze polarization in the United States today. He will explore the largest factors contributing to this political split, such as Donald Trump's presidency and social issues.

Title: Value Ethics and Political Dirty Hands

The presenter will discuss the relationship between the implementation of Michael Walzer's concept of political dirty hands and whether or not it can be reasonably implemented within our political society. This discussion will provide a framework for the discussion via a discussion of virtue ethics as described by Alasdair MacIntyre and use this framework to look at potential criticisms of dirty hands as a concept, and how its implementation may be problematic at a pre-politics level.

The presenter will discuss Oscar Wilde's usage of doppelgängers in his novel "The Picture of Dorian Gray." Types of doppelgängers, the functions of them, and how the character Dorian Gray reflects the balance between good and evil will be addressed.

Title: The Cold Steel of the Cold War

The presenter will introduce the two major small arms developed during the Cold War: the M16 and the AKM. Development, specifications, background, and modern descendants will also be discussed. Their service record, along with the similarities and differences in their developers and development, and the controversies that occurred during that time will also be discussed.

Title: “Ar tonelico” and the Emotion of Diegetic Music

Presenter will be discussing the use of various musical techniques and the emotional affect they can have upon listeners, how it can convey information, and the use of these techniques to both tell a story, and improve one. The case of diegetic music (or music that characters are capable of interacting with) will be the focus of this, and the music from the "Ar tonelico" series of RPG (role playing) video games will be the main subject of analysis on this front.

Title: Software Factory in a Box

The presenter will present a technology project that demonstrates a modern software factory i.e., a secure pipeline for developers to check in code and have it tested and stood up on Amazon cloud services (AWS). The project is using infrastructure as code to inform a cloud service how the cloud environment should look. Project is built in such a way to have a single web-based IDE that allows for the full creation/destruction of the factory in AWS. Project is hosted in a modern source version control platform called Gitlab. As code is checked into GitLab, it is tested when it passes the tests, the code is run, and the factory is created. Presentation will be in the form of a multimedia presentation where a video will be made showing the factory in operation to push a web app to production, along with a link to the project where someone can interact with the project and see how it works.

The presenter will discuss the process of using qualitative analysis techniques for the isolation and purification of a compound of interest for the identification and tracing of malignant lymph nodes in patients undergoing surgery for breast cancer. The McKendree University Gallery of Art and Art Department presents: Doom and Bloom, the Spring 2021 Juried Student Art Exhibition, featuring art created by McKendree students. With the specter of the pandemic, this year's exhibition highlights the possibilities of growth, introspection and flourish. The exhibition will be on display in the new McKendree University Gallery of Art, as well as digitally through a virtual exhibition.
McKendree University supports students and their musical skills by nuturing their
development and giving them opportunities to display their talents. These performances
provide a glimpse into the exciting musical community at McKendree.
