Office of Inclusive Education & Global Experience

Welcome!

It is our pleasure to welcome you! Our office is the Bearcat headquarters for education, resources and issues concerning diversity and inclusion, and is dedicated to the promotion of a campus community that appreciates, encourages and celebrates diversity. We accomplish this by advocating for students, creating space for cultural celebration, promoting leadership development, and providing opportunities for education and reflection about multiculturalism, privilege, and the issues of other marginalized populations. Our doors are open to all. Come visit us anytime!

Mission & Services

We work to encourage all students to participate in campus events and leadership opportunities. This office implements cultural activities that are of interest to non-majority groups of all kinds, and sponsors meetings, training sessions and workshops that discuss issues of multiculturalism, diversity, leadership development and academic skills enhancement. The office also serves the needs of international students through advocacy, support, intervention, advising, leadership and access to opportunities in the United States.

Services include the following:

  • Co-sponsoring campus-wide events that promote diversity and cultural awareness, such as the commemoration of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday, Black History month and Hispanic Heritage month.
  • Sponsoring meetings, workshops and training sessions that discuss issues of multiculturalism, diversity, leadership development and academic skills enhancement that are geared to student retention and degree attainment.
  • Planning free or low cost off-campus trips to student leadership conferences yearly that focus on ethnic heritage and self-pride.
  • Advising student groups such as the Black Student Organization (BSO) and the Black Men of McKendree (BMcK).

National Hispanic Heritage Month

Originally Hispanic Heritage observance was only a weeklong under President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968. In 1989 this observance was expanded by President Ronald Reagan and is now celebrated for a month long. Hispanic Heritage Month is now observed from September 15 – October 15. September 15 is an important start date because five Latin American countries celebrate their independence. In addition, Mexico and Chile also take time to celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18.

The Office of Inclusive Education and Global Experience hopes you use this time to explore more of this unique culture. Thank you for your time and interest!
