Employment and BOC Rate
The McKendree University Athletic Training Education Program was started in 1997 with the hiring of Dr. Dawn Hankins. The first class graduated in 2000. In 2002 McKendree received initial accreditation for the program.
Over 125 students have graduated from the McKendree University Athletic Training Education Program.
Our graduates are employed in a variety of settings including Professional Baseball (Baltimore Orioles, New York Yankees, Washington Senators and Kansas City Royals), the United States Military, Boeing Aerospace, Pharmaceutical Sales, Fitness Industry, Orthopedic Medicine, Family Practice, Hospitals, Sports Medicine Clinics, High Schools, and College/University.
Over 60% of our graduates have graduate degrees; including athletic training, healthcare administration, business administration, medicine, physical therapy and physician assistant. Six graduates are dual credentialed as ATC/PT and six are dual credentialed as ATC/PA. Other graduates have achieved credentials in nursing, physical therapy assistant and physician.
As the format and emphasis of the examination has changed so has the instruction and preparation of students in the program. While the examination no longer uses a “live” demonstration of clinical skills, all graduates of the McKendree Athletic Training Program must demonstrate a minimum passing rate on objective structured clinical exams. These exams encompass orthopedic and general medical conditions/illness scenarios that require the individual student to demonstrate a complete evaluation including diagnosis and treatment plan.
- Students must sucessfully complete a “gate” exams to test comprehensive understanding of athletic training knowledge. The exam is a computerized comprehensive multiple choice exam based on knowledge content in courses aligned with the NATA athletic training educational competencies taken in the previous academic semesters.
- Self-assessment exams are also used in the program. These exams are a combination of the Board of Certification Practice Exams and ACES. These exams help students prepare and practice for the format of the exam as well as identify strengths and weaknesses in specific Domain and Task Areas.
