Information Technology System Administrator

McKendree University is accepting applications for the Information Technology (IT) System Administrator position located at its Lebanon, IL campus.  This is a full-time, benefits eligible position.

Reporting to the Chief Information Officer and Director of IT, the IT System Administrator works collaboratively with other members of the Information Technology team at McKendree to support the faculty, staff, and students and provide IT solutions to the organization.  This role participates in the evaluation of new systems, as well as, leading and participating in software project implementations and major upgrade planning. 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manages the day-to-day operations of infrastructure by monitoring system performance, configuration, maintenance and repair.
  • Responsible for building and maintaining Active Directory infrastructure.
  • Troubleshooting of VMware virtual environments and Microsoft physical servers.
  • Responsible for Administration of Office 365 accounts and licensing.
  • Assists in implementation, troubleshooting, and support of onsite and remote user connections.
  • Administers and troubleshoots secure web system servers and web hosting environments.
  • Maintains proper documentation system installations and systems operations.
  • Assists with system backups and routine confirmation of backup completion.
  • Manages university communications software and MFA.
  • Management of ticketing system software and patch management through remote management software.
  • Performs system troubleshooting and leads problem-solving efforts sometimes involving outside vendors and other support personnel for server.
  • Ensures that records of system downtime and equipment inventory are properly maintained.

Required Qualifications:

  • 2-year Degree in MIS, Computer Science, or related field; in absence of degree, 2-4 years of System Administration Experience required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • 2-3 years of Virtualization Administration.
  • Independent, self-starter with the ability to exercise sound judgment while managing multiple projects concurrently.
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills and the ability to communicate with all of levels of users.
  • Extensive knowledge of current server OS configuration and navigation, primarily Windows.
  • Strong problem solving analytical skills, with demonstrated knowledge workflow and process requirements of application systems.
  • Proven ability to learn new content areas and new skills quickly and adapt to new software environments with and without formal training.
  • Proven ability to create, deploy, and manage computer images.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in MIS, Computer Science, or related technology field; in absence of degree, 4-5 years of progressive experience in Information Technology field.
  • 2-3 years in VMWare virtual platform administration.
  • Scripting experience in Python, C, or similar programming language.
  • Higher Education experience.

Work Hours/Conditions:

  • Office environment with routine walking to other campus buildings and offices; normal business hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; occasional evenings and weekend commitments.
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
