Scientific Materials Manager

McKendree University is seeking a highly motivated individual for a full-time Scientific Materials Manager within the Division of Science and Mathematics.

Reporting to the Chair, Science and Math Division, the Scientific Materials Manager will be responsible for preparing laboratory materials for chemistry, biology, and physics labs; maintaining laboratories, equipment, and organisms; ensuring laboratory safety; ordering supplies and maintaining chemical inventory; supervising student workers; and managing chemical/hazardous waste.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Order materials as needed for the operation of the labs in a cost-effective manner by performing price evaluations and setting up vendor agreements that gives discounts on pricing, shipping and handling costs.
  • Maintain the Division of Science and Mathematics annual budget: This involves tracking all expenses to ensure that all expenditures are appropriate and that funds are distributed on a fair basis while allowing the quality of teaching to remain high.
  • Prepare media for all department needs ranging from chemical to biological and from general to technical grade.
  • Set up and maintain physical equipment, which includes repairing, when feasible, equipment that will perform a special function for laboratory instruction while keeping cost to a minimum. If repairs cannot be done in house, then shipping equipment to outside service personnel when necessary for major repairs or calibration. Calibrating all needed equipment to achieve maximum performance.
  • Maintain a current inventory of all equipment, chemicals, and biological agents.
  • Collect, store, and dispose of all regulated laboratory waste according to EPA, CERCLA and SARA regulations and apply any changes in a timely manner.
  • Develop and maintain programs that allow the Division of Science and Mathematics to be in compliance with all OSHA CFR 29 regulations and the 1450/McKendree College Hygiene Plan that applies to laboratory safety and to the safety of faculty, staff and student body.
  • Serve as the Safety Representative for the Voigt Science Hall and perform the duties assigned to that position by the safety board.
  • Maintain records regarding laboratory safety training of faculty, staff, and students that work and attend labs within the Science and Mathematics department; storage and disposal of all chemical and biological agents maintained in Voigt Science Hall; and any other records that may apply to the duties required of this position.
  • Ensure proper maintenance of all laboratory organisms and specimens to include daily feeding and watering of greenhouse and display; long-term maintenance of permanent cultures ensuring necessary stock of food, artificial sunlight, etc. are available; and development of specimens as deemed necessary by the supervisor.
  • General Cleaning and Organizing: Insuring that after a semester that all labs are cleaned and organized in order to be ready for the upcoming semester.
  • Support, as time allows senior thesis and faculty research projects.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Chair, Department of Science and Mathematics.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Masters degree, or a bachelors degree with five (5) years’ experience in lieu of, in lab science or related field; two (2) years’ experience relating to Chemistry, Biology, Physics, EPA and OSHA regulatory compliance; supervisory and managerial abilities. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

In addition to minimum qualifications, four (4) years’ experience in an active science laboratory.

WORK HOURS/CONDITIONS:

Office and laboratory environment; 40 hours per week; normally 8:00am-5:00pm; some evening and weekend work may be required.  Heavy lifting is sometimes required. Certain items must be carried up and down stairs. Occasionally, there is lifting above the head as well as lifting and bending down.
