Financial Aid Counselor

McKendree University is accepting applications for the position of Financial Aid Counselor.  This is a full-time administrative position located in Lebanon, Illinois and reports to the Director of Financial Aid.

This position is responsible for administering daily system processing within financial aid software, ensuring office compliance with state and federal regulations, managing alternative loan process and federal aid processing with Department of Education.  The Financial Aid Counselor will be responsible for evaluating financial aid applications to determine student eligibility, awarding and processing, and record retention for their caseload. In addition to counseling and advising students and parents on various federal, state and institutional financial aid programs in accordance with all applicable rules and regulations.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Process Financial Aid Cases
    • Conduct individual counseling sessions for students and/or parents either by appointment, telephone, e-mail or walk-in.
    • Review refunds for students for assigned caseload.
    • Assist with Satisfactory Academic Progress Appeal process.
    • Represent the financial aid office to groups of students, parents and organizations
    • Provide superior customer service by responding to students' and parents' inquiries accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Administer Daily System Processing
    • Resolve system issues and other processing related tasks.
    • Assist the Director with administering Ellucian set up, coding and other system processes.
    • Manage Alternative and PLUS Loan applications.
  • Maintain and update Financial Aid website and Facebook Page
  • Perform Other Duties as Assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • 1-2 years of experience working with the public in financial matters.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Detail oriented with ability to organize multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
  • Working knowledge of various computer applications (database, word processing, and spreadsheets).
  • High level of independent judgement.
  • Strong commitment to customer service.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and appreciation of service to others.
  • Strong desire to work closely with a diverse student population, university employees, and other constituents of the university.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 2-4 years of experience in a Financial Aid Office at a college or university.
  • Knowledge of Ellucian Colleague software.
  • Department of Education Software, Microsoft Access and VAONCE is preferred.
