Director of Major and Planned Giving

McKendree University seeks a Director of Major and Planned Giving to join a high-energy, productive development team for its Lebanon, IL campus. The primary responsibility of this position is to help McKendree exceed fundraising goals through the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major donor gifts.

The Director of Major and Planned Giving will design and develop solicitation strategies, identify gift opportunities that match donor interests, personally solicit and stewarding donors, and identify prospects and opportunities to cultivate a significant pipeline. The ideal candidate will have at least three years of fundraising experience involving the personal solicitation of donors. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate success in securing gifts and pledges of $25,000 or more. Experience in higher education is preferred but not essential.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in major gift fundraising, preferably in an educational environment.
  • Proven and verifiable track record of success in identifying, cultivating, and soliciting major gifts.
  • A demonstrated ability to engage and effectively communicate with diverse audiences.
  • Willingness to travel significantly and work some evenings and weekends.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, the ability to obtain a driver’s license, or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven ability to successfully identify and build relationships with donors to connect their interests with opportunities in a higher education or other nonprofit organization.
  • Strong work ethic with attitude of teamwork and appreciation of service to others.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Passion for connecting donors with the mission of an excellent educational institution.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and experience working in a CRM or other relational database such as Advance or Raiser’s Edge.
