McKendree's Center at Scott AFB offers a Teacher Certification Program that leads to certification to teach at the secondary level. Students must have already completed a Bachelor's degree in any area. Classes meet in the evenings adjacent to Base at the Scott Elementary School. The program includes course work in Education, 3 semesters of classroom experience and a semester of student teaching. In addition, students must also pass Illinois' required tests which consist of the Basic Skills Test, a Content Area Test, and the Assessment of Professional Teaching Test. If a student has any deficiencies from their undergraduate program, these must be completed before student teaching. The requirements (29 credit hours) can be completed in 4 semesters. (The 29 credit hours does not include any credit hours for deficiencies). Tuition for courses in the Teacher Certification program is $350/credit hour. If you are currently employed in an educational capacity with a school district, inquire about the Educator's Scholarship.
