Endorsement - Middle School

McKendree offers Middle School Endorsement classes for teachers with either elementary or secondary education certificates who wish to teach in departmentalized grade 5 through grade 8 must complete additional coursework in the nature and needs of early adolescents and middle school philosophy, curriculum and instructional methods.

The Illinois State Board of Education gives the guidelines for Middle School Endorsement:

Admission
Complete the online application and select Middle School Endorsement. All students taking endorsement coursework be classified as a non-degree seeking.
 
Tuition
Educator Tuition Rate is $250 per credit hour for certified teachers or those who have experience in teaching. Tuition for the Master of Arts in Education is $330 per credit hour.
 
Financial Aid
The GATE Educational Loan, is an alternative loan for non-degree graduate students who are taking at least six hours of courses. This loan has an origination fee and the interest rate will depend on the applicants credit-worthiness and or credit-worthy co-signer. An application and more details are explained in the Gate Benefits section on the web site:  www.gateloan.com/mckendreegrad.  Federal student loans are not available for non-degree seeking students. 
 
Payment Plan
McKendree University partners with Tuition Management Systems (TMS) to offer students an interest-free monthly payment option. For an enrollment fee, the billing cost is spread out over the time period that you are taking the courses. Employer Reimbursement 
1.
Only the amount that will be paid by the employer can be deferred.  The entire amount will be subject to interest charges until the student’s portion is paid.
2.
A letter from the employer stating that the employee is eligible for tuition reimbursement will be required each semester.  Depending upon the employer’s tuition reimbursement requirements, a copy of the policy from the company may be sufficient.  This letter should be submitted to the Business Office.
3.
The employer should make McKendree the Payee (or at least the co-payee) on the check.
4.
Deferment period will terminate 30 days after the date grades are issued.
5.
The balance will be subject to interest charges if payment is not received within 30 days from the date grades are issued.

EDU 503 MIDDLE SCHOOL PHILOSOPHY AND PRACTICES (3)
Examines ideas and practices pertaining to middle school teachers. Required course for the Illinois middle school endorsement on elementary and/or secondary certificate. Focuses on middle school philosophy, curriculum and instruction, and current practices. Includes instructional methods for designing and teaching developmentally appropriate content programs in middle schools including content area reading instruction. Examines organization and scheduling procedures as well as team teaching components. Complements knowledge acquired from methods courses and examines their application to middle school ideas and practices or upper elementary grades and junior high schools. Scheduled visits to area middle schools may be included as part of the course activities. (NOTE: EDU 503 meets one of the two I.S.B.E. requirements for the Middle School Endorsement.)
 
EDU 504 EARLY ADOLESCENTS AND SCHOOLING (3)
Focuses on the developmental characteristics of early adolescents, the nature and needs of early adolescents. Includes the advisory role of the middle grade (5-8) teacher in providing appropriate guidance as well as in assessing, coordinating and referring students to health, social services and other related services. Study the development of youth of the middle school grades (5-8) and ages (10-14). Required course for the Illinois middle school endorsement on elementary and/or secondary certificate. Complements the knowledge acquired from Education 350 Educational Psychology and Psychology 406 Psychology of the Exceptional Child. Same as PSY 404. (NOTE: EDU 504 meets one of the two I.S.B.E. requirements for the Middle School Endorsement.)
