Craig Short, '86In the invitation, members had the option of
sharing a special memory of being in Philo. Here are a few of the responses:
Wm. Gehl Devore, '44
Having been licensed to preach at the age of 23 in the spring of 1940, I was likely the oldest member of the class of 1944. We had many very interesting meetings during the four years I was in Philo. I am sorry that I will not be attending the Reunion. I will be 93 years old on December, 2009 and continue to make many hospital and nursing home calls on behalf of First United Methodist Church in Waukegan where I was Senior Pastor from 1963-79 and am now Pastor Emeritus of First Church. Greetings to all in Christ's name, Gehl Devore.Miley Palmer, '58
I always looked forward to the meetings with various kinds of speeches offered - including debates and impromptu addresses.
Carrol Lowe, '42
My dad and I belonged to Philo at the same time and he was two years ahead of me. He enjoyed "brooming me" as a pledge. We had a good Philo basketball team.
Clyde R. Brown, '76
One memorable event was the production of the play "Harvey." I portrayed Elwood P. Dowd who interacts with an invisible rabbit. My fiancee, Toby Johnston, helped with the set and painted a portrait of me with Harvey the Rabbit. This play was a fund raiser for that year's Philo formal. Another memorable event was our wedding when Philo members Charlie McDonald and Charlie Headly participated in performing the wedding ceremony. Several other Philo members were in the wedding party.
Richard Tillman, '82
I recall the renovation of Philo Hall. Membership was tough as the hall was closed for 1 1/2 years, with limited access for rush meetings, etc. I'm proud to have served with a great group of people and wish I lived closer to be with you at the reunion. Russ Smith, '69
When we were pledges (fall 1966), we made the big break through to integrate Philo with including Tyron Holliday and Larry Norvelle.
During pledge period the actives kidnapped one of us and left him tied to a cross in a cemetary. After rescuing him, we kidnapped our active, drove to St. Louis and tied him to a lamp post in front of the Playboy Club. On the way over (I was driving) with the active who was bounded and on the floor in the back seat, we were stopped by a St. Louis police car. Luckily the active stayed quiet and the cop let us go on.
