Health and wellness issues pose great challenges to our nation as a whole and to our children, specifically. Developing a sense of personal responsibility for one’s wellbeing, an awareness of the multidimensionality of health and wellness, and the importance of the interrelation of those dimensions is critical to solving the nation’s health concerns. Health education draws from biological, social, and behavioral sciences to foster knowledge, create awareness, and facilitate healthy lifestyle changes. The Health Education program prepares students to become knowledgeable and skillful professionals, able to cultivate an understanding of critical health and wellness concepts and to support healthy lifestyle behavioral changes.
The Health Education major prepares students to be effective teachers and health and wellness advocates in secondary education facilities. Students in the Health Education major also develop skills in planning, programming, implementation, and evaluation, preparing them to work in community, health care, and worksite settings. The Health Education major offers students a teaching and non-teaching option. Health Education majors seeking teacher education certification must complete the requirements for the Illinois Initial Secondary (Type 09) Certificate which can be found in the Education, Health and Human Performance section of this catalog.

Minor:
To complete a minor in Health Education, the student must complete 24 hours from the Health Major offerings including HPE 158, PED 206, HPE 212, 214, 312, 323, 324, and PSY 370.
HPE 158 HEALTH (3)
The study of the dynamic interaction and interdependence among an individual’s physical well-being, mental and emotional reactions, and the social setting in which the individual exists. Coursework includes personal health, mental and emotional health, prevention and control of disease, nutrition, substance use and abuse, accident prevention and safety, community health, environmental health, and family life education. Each semester.
HPE 212 DRUG EDUCATION (3)
Examines a variety of teaching strategies and materials appropriate to the teaching of drug and alcohol use and abuse information in grades 6-12. An examination of the drug abuse from psychological, historical, and legal perspectives. The effects of drug use on the health and social function of the individual will be reviewed as well as drug abuse programs, teaching strategies, and materials. Prerequisite: HPE 158. Alternate years. Spring ‘07.
HPE 214 INTRODUCTION TO HEALTH CONCEPTS (3)
An introduction to theories and concepts of health and health education as they relate to those who will teach health in schools or community health settings. Prerequisite: HPE 158. Alternate years. Fall ‘07.
HPE 220 HUMAN NUTRITION (3)
An examination of basic principles of nutrition, the role of nutrients, body composition, as well as weight loss and weight gain programs as they apply to daily nutritional needs and eating patterns. Prerequisite: HPE 158. Alternate years. Spring ‘07.
HPE 280-289 SPECIAL TOPICS IN HEALTH EDUCATION (3)

HPE 312 PROGRAMS IN COMMUNITY HEALTH (3)
Organization and administration in local, state, and national official and non-official health agencies, their purposes, functions, and an overview of methods for meeting community health needs and for solving community health problems. Prerequisite: HP# 158. Alternate years. Spring ‘08.
HPE 323 EVALUATION IN HEALTH EDUCATION (3)
Techniques for assessing the impact of health education on the learners; selection and development of valid and reliable measures; and use of appropriate statistical procedures in classroom and community settings. Prerequisite: HPE 158 and HPE 214. Alternate years, Spring ‘07.
HPE 324 CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT IN HEALTH EDUCATION (3)
Current theories, models, and designs of program planning will be analyzed and the procedures for developing program philosophy, goals, and objectives will be examined. Prerequisite: HPE 158 and HPE 214. Alternate years, Fall ‘06.
