During homecoming 2009, all former homecoming court members are welcome to attend a special reunion gathering in the Hett Center for the Arts lobby on Saturday, October 17 from noon to 1:30 p.m. Invitations were mailed in August and the RSVP deadline is Friday, October 2.

Memories - they are still very happy memories. My "favorite memorabilia" is my husband! Bucky was my escort since he was class president. I have kept this memorabilia "out" for 52 years and it still makes me very happy. All of the events were happy times and each of the candidates were lovely girls.

The dance celebration was one of my special memories.

Janet and Ray Hassett, ‘63
As a married student in 1963, it was a first and last time for an attendant that was married. Ray and I were quite the “talk of campus!” We are still married (47½ years), have three sons, and four grandchildren. Ray and I met in Spanish Class and eloped! Homecoming was quite a honor. We had two attendants and the queen. Of course, Ray was my escort. Hope everyone enjoys catching up.

What an exciting event homecoming was back in the 50’s and 60’s. I was so happy to be runner-up to Vicki Walker Grove in 1960. My escort to the homecoming basketball game was John Sheippe. The court was all dressed up in white formals and the guys in suits and ties. What a memory! 

Erin (Maggos) Busch, '04
Homecoming has a special memory in my mind becuase it was the first official date my husband (Josh Busch c/o 2002) and I went on. He was on court in 2000, our first date; and I was in 2003, our last homecoming at McKendree. We had a great time every year and now after 5 years of marriage and one child later, the rest is history.

I can hardly believe it's been 50 years since one of the most special events in my life. The homecoming dress still hangs in a closet. It is slightly worn since my daughter and granddaughter wore it for dress up. My friend Joyce Hudson Mitchell was also a candidate that year. I can still feel the unbelief as John Mitchell placed the crown on my head. That was the first year for talent to be one of the criteria for candidates. I've often wandered if that is still part of the tradition.

I represented the junior class - we, as well as lots of other classmates, wanted to have a homecoming dance. Dancing was not permitted on campus, but many of us danced off campus (location?). The campus was divided on the issue. An article appeared in the St. Louis Post about the dilemma at McKendree between the "saints and sinners." It took a few years before dancing was considered acceptable. There was a dance that year - just not on campus.

Marilyn Doane Kohlmiller, '56
The night that I was crowned queen by my wonderful friend, Sarah Smith who was queen in '51, I was also presented an engagement ring by my future husband, Darrell Kohlmiller. We have been married for 55 years! So you can see why I have special memories of "homecoming" at McKendree.
