About the Marching Band

Formed in the late 1990s, the McKendree Marching Bearcat Band has become a fixture at athletic events as well as the entire campus community. The Marching Bearcat Band performs during the pre-game and halftime shows at McKendree football games, entertains high school students at the annual "Preview of Champions" marching band contest, and keeps the crowd pumped during the basketball season. In addition, the Marching Bearcat Band performs an annual fall concert, and participates in many other campus and local area celebrations.

Purple & White Pep Bands

The Purple and White Pep Bands are made up of all the woodwind and brass members of the MBB along with several rhythm section members. The MBB splits into two groups based upon equal instrumentation and perform at almost all home basketball games. The game schedule is usually released at the end of September. Fall semester commitment is usually about six games per band in November and early December. Spring semester this year included four double-header Saturday games for the Purple Pep Band and three double-header Thursday games and one single Tuesday game for the White Pep Band. All members report for the conference play-off which take place in early March. The full band may travel away for National Tournament play-offs. Total spring semester commitment including play-offs this year was approximately 25-27 hours not including the national tournament.

Marching Bearcat Band Camp Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to bring to MBB Camp?

We will be outside marching for at least 3-4 hours per day so you will need good, comfortable shoes suitable for marching (no flip flops or sandals without straps).  Sunscreen, loose and comfortable clothing and a hat / cap are highly recommended.   We don’t typically slow down or go inside due to the heat so having some exposure prior to getting here is strongly suggested so you are used to being outside.  I would recommend bringing an extra change of clothes each day to rehearsal just in case we have an extraordinarily hot day or we get caught in the rain.  That way you have something to change into for the rest of the day / evening.  Other than that, just plan for what you would need in your dorm room or apartment.

What time should new students arrive for move-in on the 14th and where should they go?

Students and accompanying family members should park in the main parking lot near the Fitness Center (go 2/3s around the circle drive with the statue and take the entrance into the parking lot) and meet in the Front Lobby of The Hett at 4:30 p.m.

How do students check into the residence halls?

After students have completed the MBB registration process they should go to their assigned residence halls and find the RD (Residence Director).  The RD will check in the students.  It would help if KKPsi members or Section Leaders can accompany each student / family to the dorm and help them to find the RD to check-in and then help each student to move into the dorm.

Do I move into my actual room or am I in temporary housing?

All MBB Members who will be living on campus will move into the room which you will be assigned to for the remainder of the semester so you don’t have to worry about moving twice when you come to camp!

Will I have time to unpack and set up my room before rehearsal starts?

Our first official session will be a mixer for all students (especially new students) from 9:30-10:30 p.m. in the Hett.  We want to make certain that you have an opportunity to meet and get to know the people you will be spending intensive time with for the next week.  You will have some time between our MBB registration and this meeting at 9:30 to get settled in.  If you forgot anything major Kappa Kappa Psi (honorary band fraternity) will be taking students to Wal Mart / Taco Bell on Wednesday night to pick up items you need for your room.

Will students be eating in the dining hall for most meals during band camp?

Almost all meals will take place in Ames Dining Hall during band camp.  There is at least one exception to that but the cost is covered by the university.

Is there any downtime for me to meet and get to know people or would I have to wait for classes to start for that to happen?

Kappa Kappa Psi sponsors a number of events on the evenings that we conclude rehearsal at 5:00 p.m.  You are all highly encouraged to attend these events as they are a great way for the band to spend time with each other.  So much of our time is spent working in sections that we don’t have an opportunity to interact as much across those sectional boundaries.  These events are structured for you to get to know people outside your section / instrument group.

What takes place at the MBB registration?  Is this separate from McKendree’s registration process?

All MBB members go through the MBB registration process so we can make certain that we have all your paperwork completed, register you for lessons, collect your band fee, assign you a locker, pass out music, make certain that your instrument is in good working condition, purchase any additional items for your instrument (reeds, ligature, valve oil), and a variety of other administrative items.  We do this so we don’t have to pester you and your parents throughout the semester with more paperwork, etc.  Our MBB registration ONLY pertains to the Marching Bearcat Band.  You will go through a separate registration / check-in process for the university.

What do my band fees cover?  How much are they?

New member band fees cover the cost of your MBB polo, cap, T-shirt and jacket as well as the cost of game day meals.  Returning member fees cover the cost of game day meals, your MBB T-shirt and other small group expenses during the MBB or pep band season.  New member fees are $125 and returning member fees are $35.

What time should KKPsi members plan on being at camp on the 14th?

We will try to process you through registration at 3:30 on Tuesday if possible so that you can help our new members move into the dorms after they finish registering at the 6:00 MBB registration session.
