The degree programs within Health Promotion and Wellness prepare students for careers in the challenging and ever-changing fields of health education, community health, and other health-related venues. Professionals in the field work to stimulate positive changes in the lifestyles of people with whom they interact by encouraging informed, voluntary behavior modification. Health and wellness professionals research and address key issues that affect our society such as obesity, substance abuse, violence, health care, etc. The degree programs include coursework in the areas of biology, psychology, physical and medical sciences and require a comprehensive understanding of physical health and wellness as they relate to other aspects of well-being and related behaviors. Students in the program enjoy people and working and sharing ideas with them.
As professionals they will engage in career activities that include assessing lifestyles and counseling clients, planning, implementing, and evaluating programs, working with school personnel, community leaders, medical professionals, legislators, children, adults, and the elderly. They might work in schools, on college and university campuses, in business and industry, in health care or fitness facilities, for local, state, or national governmental agencies or private and professional organizations, think tanks, in marketing or sales, in media venues, or as private consultants. Graduates may go on to earn masters and doctorate degrees in the field or other related areas. Certification from a nationally recognized agency is available on a voluntary basis if certain criteria are met.
