The New Book: Ebook Authoring Past, Present & Future
4th International Conference on the Book - Emerson College
(Boston, MA). Workshop October 20-22 2006.

netConnect article on (r)Evolutionary (e)Books
William Harroff & Charlotte Johnson. June 2006.

There are no objects of more importance to the history of civilization than the book. Welcome to a project celebrating the book's latest evolution, the eBook or electronic book (as opposed to the pBook or printed book).

And wait until you see the technological developments over the next few months! That's just one good reason why you should return to our website again and again. What you're seeing now is the culmination of years of research.

The site is arranged so that there is something for everyone, from the individual with only a casual interest to those who want to experience the cutting edge of technology. I'm proud to introduce you to a few creative minds who have already reached a high level of accomplishment. Whether you are a librarian, teaching faculty member, student, artist, educator, writer or technophobe, your familiar “book” world is rapidly changing, whether you participate or not.

Enjoy our online show.

Due to the technical complexity and experimental nature of these artworks, you may experience difficulty in viewing some of them. We have endeavored to make the material accessible and appear as the creators intended, but some features may not be functional in every work. Please note that viewers may find some of the material objectionable, inappropriate or unsuitable for children (of all ages) because of its language, content, or imagery.

This initial project was made possible thanks to two McKendree Information Technology Grants from
the Illinois First Faculty Development Fund, the Lewis & Clark Library System, ArtEAST, the Illinois
State Library, the Madison County Arts Council, Illinois Arts Council - a State Agency, Target,
the River Bend Growth Association, the City of Edwardsville and the Friends of Art - SIU Edwardsville.
Thanks, too, to so many of our colleagues, friends and loved ones.

The "Brother Bill & Sister Char (r)Evolutionary (e)Books Traveling Tour” has included events, programs and workshops at academic and public libraries, as well as professional conferences such as the 1st - 4th Future of the Book in Australia, China, England and, this year, in Boston; the University of Calgary’s 1st and 2nd Best Practices in E-Learning; the Library and Information Technology Association National Forum; the Illinois Library Association; the Metropolitan New York Library Council; the Missouri Library Network Corporation; the first joint conference of the Art Libraries Society of North America and the Visual Resources Association of the American Library Association; the eBooks in Illinois Academic Libraries Conference; the Audio eBooks Conference; the Lewis & Clark, Shawnee & Lincoln Trail Library systems; as well as at the Illinois State Library and the Chicago Public Library.

The (r)Evolutionary (e)Books Model was selected as a 2002 Best Practice by the Illinois State Library and, in 2003 & 2004, by the University of Calgary for their Best Practices in e-Learning Conference. In 2002, the associated website also received a P22 design award. McKendree Faculty Development Grants, Information Technology Grants from the Illinois First Faculty Development Fund, the Illinois Arts Council, Beta Phi Mu and the Illinois State Library have all supplied financial support.
