St. Louis Arc

Book Club Facilitators – October – May

Thursday Evenings – 7pm – 8pm – 8 locations – St. Peters and Chesterfield (Borders or Barnes & Noble Bookstores)

Book Clubs provide adolescents and adults 13 and older with disabilities the opportunity to read, learn to read, talk about books, and make friends in a fun, community setting.   Volunteers will facilitate and lead the book clubs.


Mentoring Adults in Community Activities - Community Integration— All year round

Monday-Friday between 9:45am-3:45pm, full days or half days, located in North County off West Florissant and Dunn Road

You can provide the support someone needs to get out and participate in fun, rewarding community activities! Teach someone simple carpentry, reading, beading, or go out to lunch every month. There are unlimited opportunities to match volunteers with individuals and similar interests.  Volunteers will get support from professional staff.  Volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum time frame so that relationships will blossom.

 

Bowling Volunteers – September – April

Saturday Mornings – Four Bowling locations – Chesterfield, Creve Coeur, Shrewsbury, Sunset Hills

Bowling is for adults 18yrs and older. They bowl every Saturday or every other Saturday.  They learn new skills and enhance old bowling skills. At the end of the session, every league has a party.  We need volunteers to run the bowling league, assist bowlers, help keep score, etc.

 

Dance Chaperones - September – May – 1st Friday and 3rd Saturday of the Month

Club South – St. Lucas Church in South City and Club 1240 – Rainbow Village in Creve Coeur

Dances are for adults 18yrs and older with disabilities who are interested in socializing and dancing.

120 people per dance.  Volunteers help with attendance at the door, chaperone the dance, serve refreshments and set-up and break down   


Yoga Instructor and Assistants – 4 week sessions throughout the year

Wednesdays, 5pm-6pm or Thursdays, 10am-11am, Creve Coeur

Assist adults with disabilities as they learn how to stretch, do downward dogs and warrior poses.  Certified Yoga instructor needed.   


Photo Club Assistants – 4 week session October – November

Tuesdays, 1pm – 3pm, Creve Coeur

Assist adults with disabilities as they take a class to express themselves through photography.  Take adventures to different places in St. Louis and capture it all in pictures.  Class is working towards an exhibition.

Basketball Coaches – December – March ** Head coach needed for South City team**

Saturday mornings – 9:30am – 11:30am – 8 teams, South City, North County, Kirkwood, Shrewsbury, Crestwood (2 teams), Town & Country and Des Peres

Basketball is for adults 18yrs and older. They go through rigorous practices to learn new skills and enhance old basketball skills. During the course of the winter, the teams travel to play other teams throughout the Greater St. Louis area competing in Special Olympics.  Volunteers organize practices, teach basketball skills, assist coaches, etc.    


Cultural Happenings – All year round

Thursday and Friday evenings, Saturday and Sunday various times –

Cultural Happenings is for adults with disabilities.  C.H. offers the chance to socialize with peers, make new friends, practice decision-making skills, and experience independence.  Each month participants, staff and volunteers receive a calendar full of events to choose from.  Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.  Each event has 3-5 participants, 1 paid program leader and 1 volunteer.  Group meets at 1-2 of the 4 pick up locations and travels together to the event.  Volunteers assist program leader, cost of event for volunteer is paid for by the Arc. 


Filing Clerk – Childgarden Child Development Center – All year round

Monday-Friday, anytime 6am-6pm

Childgarden is committed to providing high-quality early care, active learning and nurturing relationships for children of all abilities, age 6 weeks to 8 years.  Volunteers are needed to assist with on-going filing build up in the office.

Family Hospice
Volunteers visit with patients and assist with Health Fairs and HeartLink.  Training sessions are held twice a year; the 2008 training sessions are being held on October 11th and October 18th, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  For more information contact Julie Pena at jpena@familyhospice.org or 618-277-1800.

Lebanon Kids, Inc.
Volunteers needed to tutor/mentor Lebanon students in grades 5-8 from 3:30-4:30 P.M., one to four day/s a week over a six-week marking period, with option to extend.  Lebanon Kids, Inc. is seeking to bolster academic support for students struggling to keep up with school subjects.  For more information, call Carol (537-2525) or Conrad (799-8957).


Illinois Coalition for Community Services 

What: This is an after-school program designed for children grades K-4 focusing on reading.  There is one-on-one group reading.  There will also be indoor and outdoor activities, educational and recreational field trips planned.

The Mascoutah Senior Center is looking for volunteers to work in the kitchen.  Volunteers are needed to work on Monday through Friday, from 8:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M.  Volunteers usually work one day a week.  For those who cannot work the full five hours, persons can possibly split a shift.  Volunteers are provided a free meal, as well as the opportunity to meet new friends and work in a fun and sociable atmosphere.  Contact Mary or Sandra at 566-8758, or stop by the Senior Center for a visit.  For driving directions, click here.

Do you want to make a difference in someone's life?  Do you want to help our elderly neighbors remain independent in their own homes?  If you've said YES, Christian HomeCare Services, Inc. Volunteer Interfaith Caregivers (VIC) has an opportunity for you!  VIC is looking for personable, polite, reliable, and hard-working volunteers to assist with the coordination of assisted transportation to nearly 60 seniors a month in eastern St. Clair County.  Knowledge of general office procedures is helpful, but not required.  An understanding of confidentiality is essential.  The ability to work with other volunteers and with people in the community whose circumstances leave them with social or physical needs is required, as is a sincere respect for the individual faiths of our community and the ability to work with representatives from many faiths.  Training will be provided.  For more information, please contact:
