Highland Animal Shelter
What is it? Highland Animal Shelter is a no-kill animal shelter. Help is needed in caring for the animals and maintaining the facilities.
What are the different jobs?
--1 Isolation cleaner: Cleans dog cages, feeds the dogs, and fills the water buckets.
--2 Dog Walkers: They walk the dogs in the Isolation area so that the other volunteer can clean the cages.
--2 Cat people: These volunteers clean the cat boxes, feed the cats, fill water bowls, change pillowcases, give the cats treats, and sweep and mop the cat room.
--2 Dog Cleaners: These volunteers spray out the dog kennels, squeegee out the kennels, fill water buckets, and replace rugs and food dishes in the kennels.
--1 Dog Feeder: This person fills the dogs’ food bowls with dry and wet food so that the dog cleaners can put the new bowls in the cages. This volunteer also sweeps and mops the kennel area.
--1 Fill in cleaner: This person cleans the kitchen, does any dishes that are in the kitchen area, sweeps and mops the kitchen area, and fills in for any volunteer who is not available.
When is it? We meet at Upper Deneen at 5 pm on Wednesdays and we get back around 7:45 pm.
What are the requirements? Volunteers are expected to work the entire time we are at the shelter. When assigned duties are done, we fill the food and litter bins if needed, take out all trash, and make sure everything is clean before volunteers may play with the animals.
Why would I want to do that? "I love this program because I can actually see the difference that we make. I am the fill in cleaner and I am in charge of the kitchen area. The shelter kitchen is usually in a state of disarray and I can tell that it is cleaner when I leave. It gives me a sense of accomplishment to know that I help the animals because they cannot help themselves." ~Kelly Quirin
Note for Returning Volunteers: The shelter has new management and has changed its policies. Anyone can now attend anytime as the shelter appreciates any help they can get. Also, the shelter is much more organized and clean making it better for both us and the animals!!
