How can I reuse my items within different LiveText documents? I already have a lesson plan or project that is in LiveText, but my instructor wants me to put it in the McKendree University Teacher Education portfolio. Is there any way to link to this without having to copy and paste the document into a new location? How can I hyperlink my documents within LiveText?
Yes, there is! Follow these steps:
- Open the document in which you want to place your old LiveText items like projects, lesson plans etc. Click the edit link corresponding to the section where you wish to place the reusable content. You are now in the "edit" mode.
- You are now in the editing window with a toolbar (similar to that in Word) directly above the text area provided for you to type in. This toolbar gives formatting options to right align, left align, italicize etc. There is a button for hyperlinks outside of LiveText, and next to it is a button (icon with LiveText logo on chain link) to insert a LiveText link. Click on that button.
- In the window that pops up, locate the document you wish to reuse. It can be a project, lesson plan, portfolio, etc. you have created before. Place a check mark in the box corresponding to that item.
- Click on the button [insert] at the top of that window. The name of the item will show up in the area where you generally type.
- Click [Save], and [Finish].

How can I add a video to my document on LiveText?
You can add a video file to your LiveText document just like you add attachments.
- Open the document you need to insert the video in.
- Click the edit link for the section where the video needs to be posted.
- Next to "Attachments" below the editing window, click on the edit link.
- Browse for your video file.
NOTE: Make sure it is in the correct format and is in the right size. Make any edits to the file before you attach it in LiveText as you cannot make the edits in LiveText.
Attach your file
Finish the process.
- Click the Finish link above the editing window to exit the editing mode and go back to your document.

How can I add an image or a scanned item to my LiveText document?
You can add an image or a scanned item (which, by default, is saved as an image by scanners) file to your LiveText document in a way very similar to adding attachments.
- Open the document you need to insert the image/scanned file in.
- Click the edit link for the section where the image needs to be posted.
- Next to "Images" below the editing window by the attachments option, click on the edit link.
- Browse for your image file.
NOTE: Make sure it is in the correct format and is in the right size. Make any edits to the file before you attach it in LiveText as you cannot make the edits in LiveText.
Attach your image file (don't worry - it will appear as an image and not an attachment)
Finish the process.
- Under "Image" you will now see the options Caption, Display Size, Placement.
- If you would like a caption, enter it in the Caption section.
- For Display Size, click on the dropdown menu, and make sure that it is Medium or Large (up to 900 x 600). If you make the display size any larger than this, the image will be too large for the screen. If your document is already about this size (it should say next to Original what size it is), then it should be okay.
- Under Placement, you can choose where you would like the image placed amongst the text.
- Click [Save] button below the editing window and then click Finish link above the editing window to exit the editing mode and go back to your document.
- Check your image when you go back to the relevant page of your project to make sure that the size is right and readable.

How do I revise and resubmit a particular assignment after reviewing the comments by my instructor?
To revise an assignment or make any changes to it, you just need to browse to that assignment in your LiveText account, and click the edit link to get to the Word-like editing page. Then make the necessary changes and hit [Save section] button, and then the finish link. Now you have made the changes in your assignment, but the instructor still has the old copy. So you need to resend the assignment to your instructor. Use the standard “Share” process you perform to submit your work.

I know how to submit my portfolio to my instructor. But, how do I submit my lesson plans and projects?
The submission process in LiveText is similar, regardless of if it is a project or lesson plan or portfolio etc. From your My Desk area, click on the project or LP you need to submit. When in that document, click the Submit for Review link on top and lookup your instructor as a reviewer.
<TOP>
I submitted my assignment to my instructor, as a reviewer, in time before the deadline. But why does my review still say "pending" for days?
The "pending" status indicates that your instructor has not yet reviewed and/or assessed your document. It has nothing to do with the timely submission of your assignment.
First, check whether a plus sign appears next to the review. If so, then click it to see if older copies of your review do not show as "pending". If you have pending on all of those, you need to get in touch with your instructor and find the reason for the hold-up.

I shared my project with my instructor. But I decided to change a sentence. Do I have to share the project every time I make changes?
LiveText is a real-time software. When you share your project/lesson plan/portfolio with your instructor, you are actually giving her/him permissions to your own document. Thus, they see a "live" version of your document in their account. Any changes you make to your document, once saved, your instructor will see the changes immediately. Hence, if you make changes to a project after sharing it with your instructor, you do NOT have to share it again. Do not forget to save your changes when you are in the editing mode.

Is there a way for an outsider who has not purchased LiveText to view my portfolio on LiveText? OR, how do I create a visitor's pass? OR, how can I burn a CD containing my LiveText portfolio?
Yes there is! In fact, there are a couple of ways a LiveText non-user can view your LiveText portfolio.
Visitor’s Pass: If you have a website (or resume) and you need to direct people to your LiveText materials from there, this is the best way. Using the alphanumeric code, visitors can get access to the materials you wish to share with them.
- Log into your LiveText account. On left hand side, under “Collaboration”, click on Visitors
- Click the button [Create].
- Title it the name you wish to give this group of visitors, like “Website visitors” or “Employers”
- Click [Save].
- Now you will see a listing of your Visitor’s passes. Note the alphanumeric code displayed in the column “Visitor’s Pass”. Post this code with some instructions on your website or type it on your resume (or create an index card to go with resume!).
- The visitors will have to go to www.livetext.com and enter this code in the Visitors Area – visitor’s pass field (left hand side, below sign in and register account links)
- You need to now share your LiveText documents with the visitors.
- Go to “My Desk”, and locate the document you wish to share.
- Open the document and click the Share link
3. At the bottom of the box which appears you will note the group you created as your visitors. Type this name in the “Share with Viewers” section.)
4. Click the advanced options selection
5. Click the “Share” radio button
6. Click Save
7. To un-share a document at any time with the visitor, open the document, click Share, then Advanced options, check the visitor group and click Remove checked. Then click finish.
8. To delete a visitor group, click on Visitors under “Collaboration”. Check the visitor group you wish to delete, and click [Delete].
Burn a CD or save to disk: You can download and save your work from LiveText onto a disk or burn it to a CD, and retain all the formatting and links just as is!
1. Open your document you wish to download from LiveText.
2. Click the link More… at the right-top corner (next to the share and print links)
3. Click the link Export document as zipped HTML files.
4. Save the zipped file to your desktop.
5. Then go to your desktop, and right-click the zip file. Click “Extract All” to extract the contents into another folder.
- Rename the extracted folder if you wish.
- Copy this folder to the disk or burn it to a CD. You can also place multiple folders created like this onto a CD to create a collection of your portfolios and projects.

When do you renew your LiveText subscription and how?
The LiveText membership you have purchased is good for five years from the date of activation. However, at this point you do NOT have to renew your LiveText membership. LiveText has not turned anybody "off" yet, and your account is alive as long as you use it regularly after the five years.
