About Us

The Heritage of McKendree University Winterguard was founded in 2005 with a desire to allow more opportunities for winter guard performance for young adults. With a cast of eight people, Heritage debuted in the MCCGA circuit in class Independent Regional A with their show “Breakaway” with music by Kelly Clarkson. In their first year out they finished 2nd place at the MCCGA Championships. In 2006 Heritage moved into the Independent A class of MCCGA and performed “Nothing Else Matters” a Metallica cover performed by Apoctolyptica. 2007 brought ten performers together for “Morning Has Broken” by Dianne Reeves. In 2008 music from the ballet Pulcinella by Stravinsky inspired “Looking for Tomorrow in Yesterday.” Heritage finished fourth in its class this year at the MCCGA championships. In 2009 Regina Spektor’s “Us” provided the music for Heritage’s show and they once again placed fourth overall at the MCCGA championships. Heritage has also competed in WGI regionals for the past five years.

This year the Heritage of McKendree University Winterguard debuts its 2010 show, “The Dreaming Tree” with music by Dave Matthews Band, and its largest group of talented young performers to date, 16. Inspired by the lyrics of the song, as well as the famous children’s book “The Giving Tree” by Shel Silverstein, “The Dreaming Tree” is a unique experience that illustrates the painful experiences growing up and facing the real world and its challenges. This year marks our first year as members in the Midwest Color Guard Circuit (MWCGC). We also continue to be a competitive member of the Midcontinent Color Guard Association (MCCGA) and the Winter Guard International (WGI) circuits. This year’s competition schedule has Heritage competing 9 competitions as well as the MCCGA Championships in Springfield, MO. Heritage is excited and proud to continue its strong tradition of education, creativity and freedom of expression in 2010.
