Accompanying Policy

For Departmental Performance Classes (DPC’s):
1.   Music must be given to accompanist three weeks prior to DPC performance.
(The difficulty of the music is not a factor in the deadline for turning in music, but rather the time required to schedule adequate rehearsal time; therefore an “easy” accompaniment still cannot be turned in later than three weeks before the performance date.)
2.   Failure to acquire an accompanist for an accompanied piece means not performing that piece on the DPC. (And not performing on the DPC affects your applied lessons grade.)
3.   You must meet with the accompanist at least once prior to performance. The accompanist can request additional rehearsal time with you prior to the DPC as needed.
4.   All assignments for student accompanists will be given by Heather Miller. Mrs. Miller will determine if she or a student will accompany any given performance.
5.   No substitute accompanists are permitted.
6.   Mrs. Miller will attend rehearsals between you and student accompanists when possible. Any problems between soloist and accompanist need to be brought to her attention so they can be resolved amicably and quickly.
7.   If you must miss a rehearsal, contact the accompanist in advance (or as soon after the missed rehearsal as possible if an emergency situation has occurred). Missed rehearsals will be rescheduled with good cause for the absence. Failure to attend a rehearsal without contacting your accompanist will result in an unaccompanied performance.
8.   Vocalists will provide song translations to accompanists within one week of giving music. If singing from opera or oratorio, scene synopses are also required.
9.  Vocalists may give their music and translations directly to Lan-Sin Lim, but student accompanists will still be assigned to perform with vocalists at the discretion of Mrs. Miller and the voice faculty.

For recitals:
Meet with Mrs. Miller to discuss accompanying for an upcoming recital; she will then coordinate with Miss Lim regarding vocal recitals. (Remember to bring the Recital Audition Permission Form with you so she can sign off on dates and locations.) Mrs. Miller will determine if she or a student will accompany all or parts of your recital. All music for the recital must be turned in no later than eight weeks prior to the recital audition.

Preparing for senior/junior recitals:
1 hour weekly the semester of the student’s individual recital
Preparing for DPCs/VPCs –all students (majors & minors & others):
15 minutes the week before or of the week of the performance*
General preparation:
Vocal performance majors and Music Education majors, for whom voice is his/her primary instrument, may rehearse with the accompanist up to a ½ hour weekly during both fall and spring semesters.
Preparing for Studio Recitals for the public – (These are not SPCs; a studio recital is when an instructor’s entire studio is going to present a concert and each students is performing 2-3 piece.s)
Each student may rehearse wit the accompanist ½ hour for 4 weeks leading up to the studio recital.
* It is at the discretion of Ms. Blue or Ms. Lim to decide if additional time is needed.

Concert Attendance Requirements

All music majors are required to attend 6 concerts per semester, of which 3 must be professional. The other three concerts may be student concerts, but these must be concerts in which the student is NOT participating. All music minors, whoare enrolled in one of their four semesters of required lessons, must attend 4 concerts per semester, of which 2 must be professional. The other two concerts may be student concerts, but once again they cannot fulfill this requirement with a concert in which they are participating. Once minors have finished their four required semesters of lessons, they no longer have to turn in concert programs, even if they continue to take lessons for their own enjoyment.

Students should hand in these programs, with a music faculty member’s signature, at his/her jury for his/her primary instrument. (If the concert is an off-campus event, a program with ticket stub will be accepted.)  If a student should fail to do these reviews, their grade should reflect this. (One missed review can be made up the next semester, but two or three missed reviews may constitute dropping the grade a third of a letter grade.)

Concert Attire

Departmental Performance Class (DPC)
Studio Performance Class (SPC)

All DPC's will be in the Hett Auditorium, unless notes.

All music majors are required to attend both DPCs and SPCs. DPCs are purely performances while SPCs are to be similar to master classes with students commenting constructively on performances and instructors leading the class. Mr. Smithiger will be in charge of Percussion SPCs,  Dr. Wilhelm – woodwinds, Mr. Boggs – brass, Dr. Ypma-keyboard and Mrs. Harres- vocal.   These classes will take place in the Hettenhausen Center for the Arts or in Bothwell Chapel every first, third and fifth Monday of the month at 5:00 pm. All majors must perform on their primary instrument at a DPC at least once a semester. Instructors should let Dr. Ypma know which students are performing on the next DPC one week prior.  All students should perform several times on SPCs.

Policies

Late Assignments
Beginning in the fall of 2006, we instituted a departmental policy regarding late papers. If a paper is one day late, it will be marked down one letter grade, for example an A paper would receive a B, etc.  If the paper is 2 days late, it is docked 2 letter grades, and so on. Therefore, an A paper which is 5 days late, will receive a failing grade.  If there are extenuating circumstances, such as illness or an emergency, then it is understood that the professor will deal with the situation appropriately.

Attendance Policy
Students are expected to be on time to every class and rehearsal.  Success as a music student can only come by being full prepared to learn.

Academic Honesty
The Music Department follows the University policy on this.  Anyone caught cheating or plagiarizing will be documented.

0 Credit
Full-Time Status as a student is between 12-18 hours.  In order to stay within this frame, ensembles can be taken for 0.0 hour as long as they are taken for a grade.

Practice Expectations

Students taking applied lessons at McKendree University can be divided into five groups: Music Performance (Classical & Jazz) Majors, Music Education Majors, Music History/Church Music/Music Business Majors, Music Minors and those who are not majors or minors.

Students who are majoring in Performance (classical or jazz) receive an hour lesson each week and are expected to practice a minimum of 2 hours a day, at least 6 days a week.

Students who are majoring in Music Education and Church Music receive a half hour lesson each week and should practice a minimum of 1-1 ½ hours a day on their primary instrument, at least 6 days a week.

Students majoring in Music History and Music Business receive a half hour lesson each week and should practice a minimum of 1 hour a day, at least 6 days a week.

Students minoring in music receive a half hour lesson each week and are expected to practice a minimum of 30 minutes a day, at least 6 days a week.

Students, who are studying for their own enjoyment or in order to improve their ensemble skills, receive a half hour lesson each week and are expected to practice 20-30 minutes a day, at least 6 days a week.

Scales and Technique: In addition to studying repertoire, all students are expected to learn their scales.  All music students should be able to play and/or sing all major/minor scales, chords and arpeggios. Vocalists should know the solfege tonal patterns also. It is also highly recommended that the students develop their technique through various exercises which are appropriate to their instrument.
